If you live in or around LA, Seattle, or Denver, we’ve got a new nail salon that you HAVE to try this weekend! Since it found its shop-in-shop home in Nordstrom at The Grove and Melrose in LA, Base Coat has been our new west coast home-base for non-toxic manicures and rejuvenating girl time. They use their own line of polishes, all of which are 8-free. This means that they take the 8 worst offending ingredients commonly found in nail polishes out of their products (see the list below)- better for you and your nail technician. Even the gels they offer are 10-free and medical grade.
Let’s not get it confused though, even clean polish contains synthetic ingredients, it has to in order for the polish to stick and dry to your nail. But pretty nails doesn’t have to be one of those things you give up for your health’s sake, you just have to take conscious steps towards choosing something better. Base Coat makes it even easier by offering over 105 gorgeous shades to suit each and every skin tone.
While sitting in the 70s era green velvet arm chairs, getting our toes done, we feel warm and welcomed. Co-Founders Tran Wills and Sarah Simon worked hard to cultivate that nurturing atmosphere to make clean nail care a better experience on all levels. While you find a location near you, we’re going to hope and wish that they’ll open a shop-in-shop in our Manhattan Nordstrom 🙂
So what’s so bad about those nail ingredients any way? The ones Base Coat nixed completely? Well…
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP):
This stuff is gross. It’s an endocrine disruptor (messes with your hormones), toxic for the organs, and to make it worst, it bioaccumulates so the more you use it, the more bad news it brings.
We don’t like this stuff one bit. It’s a solvent derived from benzene (a known carcinogen). It’s linked to neurotoxicity, blood/brain/reproductive cancers, and birth defects. Needless to say, if you’re pregnant or thinking about becoming so… STAY AWAY!
Seriously… the FDA allows this in small doses in nail polishes. It seems silly that we even have to go here but formaldehyde is a great preservative, so it’s use is pretty common. It’s a neurotoxin, carcinogen, and if that’s not bad enough, an allergy trigger.
It’s derived from formaldehyde and can cause severe allergic reactions and skin irritations, and loss of nerve sensation. We asked for a manicure, not a rash!
This is a tricky one. It’s what gives most nail polishes their pretty shine but it smells like Vicks VapoRub. There is naturally derived camphor in plants like rosemary, but no one needs to be inhaling it all day, every day, especially not your technician. It can get rid of your cold but over exposure to the fumes can cause serious nausea and dizziness.
This is the magic ingredients that turns wet nail polish dry in mere minutes. It’s already banned in Europe for kind of a strange reason- its antibiotic properties. The concern is that it will build antibiotic resistance over time. It is also a big endocrine disruptor.
Xylene is how your polish sticks to your nails. But it also leads to nausea and dizziness so we’ll skip it, thanks.
Quite literally the bane of our existence. Simply put, it’s a preservative so harmful mold and bacteria don’t grow in your nail polish bottle. Most companies are smartening up and taking this out of their products as they are big endocrine disruptors (it mimics estrogen) and linked to breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.
