With summer coming to an end, we had to put together a bronzed look tutorial because let’s face it, this summer went by way too fast and we’re simply not ready for it to be over. When it comes to this look, think JLo: tan and glowy. As always, we used all non-toxic beauty products and highlighted a few new ones that we’re really excited about. Laney breaks down what she did for the look below:
BRONZED BEAUTYThe California Cool, Clean Beauty Look
“Being from California, I’m always chasing that surfer, cool girl look. Sadly, I don’t know how to surf (yet!), but I have perfected my beach girl look. We’re going for a super casual, surfer hair. So, all I did was put it into a loose braid and then applied product later.” – Laney
“To prep the skin, I want it to be super dewy and moisturized, so I applied a face serum all over. Osmia Organics Balancing Face Oil has the added benefit of getting out some redness, which is nice since my skin has been super red and irritated lately. This oil has Black Cumin Seed Oil in it which is extremely calming.” – Laney
“Now for a base, I started with a tinted moisturizer. You want to go one shade darker than usual. Pretty much any tinted moisturizer will do, but if you’re looking to try something new, I’m a fan of the Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream. It has a really nice dewiness.
Next, you want to go over any places that need more coverage with your concealer. Like, under your eyes, around your nose, over any blemishes, etc. I’ve been hooked on W3ll People’s Concealer Bio Correct Multi-Action Concealer ever since Shirley did my makeup. It goes on super smoothly when applied with your fingers and has great coverage.” – Laney
“For the eye, I wanted a really great bronzed sultry shimmer. Again, think JLo. I tested a ton of eyeshadows, but the Ilia Silken Shadow Sticks won out in the end. They have coconut and olive oil in them so they slide on really well and are hydrating for the skin. The shimmer is really velvety, not too much, not too little. I used shade Next to You but there are darker shades too.
To make the look more smoky, I used Jillian Dempsey’s Khol Eyeliner in Rich Brown. You could also use the black one if you wanted to go more nighttime. Jillian’s eyeliners have lots of oils in them as well, like jojoba and marula, so they slide and smudge easily. I only applied the liner to the outer upper and lower lash-line to make the eyes seem bigger. They come with a smudger on one end, but I just used my fingers to blend it in. This way it looks more sexy/slept in too.
Next I applied mascara to finish off the eye look. Any one will do, but since the Kjaer Weis one was in my makeup bag, that’s the one I went with.” – Laney
Lips and Cheeks
“The cheekbone and highlighter is super important for this look since we’re going for the all-over golden, glowy vibe. One of my new favorite product lines is Olio E Osso and their Bronze stick is perfect for this look. I put it all over my cheeks, cheekbones, eye bone, and lips. Plus it’s compact so it’s good for touch ups while out and about.
Since you always want to use two different colors on your cheeks for dimension (a trick I picked up from one of our beauty editor friends) I applied a nude-pink cream blush from Kjaer Weis to the apples of my cheeks. Kristen, the founder, gave me this shade to balance out the redness in my cheeks and it wear it all the time.” – Laney
“Lastly, it’s time to mess up the hair. My hair likes a lot of product and I want the look to be kinda like I haven’t washed it in a few days because I’ve been in and out of the ocean surfing. Rahua is the gold standard of natural hair products. I layered the Voluminous Spray and the Sea Salt Spray. The Sea Salt Spray is new and I’m kinda obsessed. It smells sooooo good, like the tropics.
That’s it. Super easy, super summery, super casual sexy.” – Laney
