Any day of the week, we take quality over quantity. With a new collection of nail and lip colors to supplement an already incredible skincare line, David Arbuthnot, founder of clean beauty brand, CONTEXT SKIN, gives us the power to choose both. We met Arbuthnot this week at Chillhouse, a cool downtown cafe and spa, to test out the moisturizing lip lacquers and put the latest line of 5-free vegan nail polishes to the test with a manicure. We chose Panama, a high-shine beige nude; Totally chic for summer.
After admiring our shiny nails and softened lips, we bombarded Arbuthnot with a few questions to get the details on this clean ingredient, unisex beauty line.
The Moment: These colors are so versatile, but still feel like a statement. What was your inspiration behind this collection?
Arbuthnot: CONTEXT has always been about essential products and colors. I wanted this collection to be about nudes, neutrals and blush tones that compliment each other and have a calming soft effect.
The Moment: Why was it important for you to create a line that’s vegan, gluten free and paraben free?
Arbuthnot: We launched as a unisex skincare brand. Our skin care products are formulated with antioxidants, herbal extracts, and essential oils. As we have expanded to color, nails, and home, we’ve stayed true to our core brand values. Our customers trust that all our products are safe and healthy for them to use.
The Moment: You used to work at Dior, how did the experience influence you in starting your own line?
Arbuthnot: Working in the luxury business teaches you the importance of quality in all aspects of your business, from the ingredients to the packaging to the marketing. The products and the brand message to the consumer need to be clear and always stay the course.
The Moment: When you think about the Context girl or guy, who is that person? What do they like to do in their spare time?
Arbuthnot: I hope they are interested in minimal design aesthetic and living a clutter free lifestyle. Fitness, Music, Design and Travel take up their free time!
The Moment: How do you define beauty?
Arbuthnot: For me, beauty is about acceptance, just feeling comfortable and confident.
