I’ve been on a mission to grow my nails for as long as I could remember. No, I’m not a nail bitter or anything like that, and for the most part, my nails looked pretty healthy, but they would just always break after a certain point. I remember trying to bend my friend’s nails in high school out of admiration for her super long, almost fake looking nails. They wouldn’t bend, they were so, so strong. How could I get mine to do that?! A decade later and here we are, and I finally just discovered the secret. Turns out the magic ingredients are an array of B Vitamins; Some swear by Biotin (also known as B-7) to thicken the nail plate, others choose B-12 to nourish the nail bed, or Folic Acid (or B-9) to support healthy nail growth. I’ve found that a combo of B complexes works the best to support nail growth on all fronts.
It’s no surprise that my nails would break because a lot of the average person’s Vitamin B comes from a diet rich of fish, meat, and dairy- all of which I don’t really eat. Chances are if you’re reading this, you don’t eat a lot of it either so I won’t sit here and tell you to eat more fish and eggs like many beauty sites do. But there are so many more (vegan) ways to get your B Vitamins.
My all time favorite is sprinkling Braggs Nutritional Yeast on every snack and entree I go near. It’s eerily similar to parmesan cheese and so good on popcorn with a little coconut oil and paprika. It’s got B-1, B-2, B-3, B-6, Folic Acid (B-9), B-12 and a few other good-for-your-nail ingredients like Selenium and Zinc. Supplement a high intake of nutritional yeast with a biotin pill and you’ve got the recipe for super long, super healthy nails.
We like HUM Killer Nails supplement. The supplement is made up of only Biotin so you don’t get that diversity in B complexes without the nutritional yeast, but it’s easy to take every single day and will really boost your nail growth.
In addition to B Vitamins, you can supplement the process with He Shou Wu powder from Sun Potion in your tonics and teas to make nails grow faster. It’s a tuberous root powder from southern China that possesses incredible rejuvenation properties.
We also love Olive & June Rosy Matcha and Minty Lavender beauty teas which are loaded with herbs to help nail and skin grow long. Plus they are so yummy.
Take a photo of your nails before you add Vitamin B in your life, and then a month after, and show us your transformation! Did it work for you? How did you up your B Vitamin intake?
