Johanna Peet of Peet Rivko teaches us how to properly use the Peet Rivko Gentle Cleanser, the best non toxic cetaphil replacement in today's Moment Must

Peet Rivko Gentle Cleanser

There are a few drugstore beauty products we’ve had a really hard time giving up since switching to clean beauty. The biggest offender: Cetaphil. Part of the problem is that those big bottles last for freaking forever. But, it’s also #1 Dermatologist recommended for a reason: it’s super gentle (if you ignore all the toxins). Since it’s fragrance-free and gel-like, it doesn’t strip your skin. Until recently we just couldn’t find a replacement. But finally we did, and now we can’t live without it.

The Peet Rivko Gentle Cleanser is so good thanks to its next-level natural standard of ingredients, and zero potential irritants (like essential oils and fragrances). It’s formulated with aloe vera and comfrey, both extremely soothing ingredients, and like Cetaphil, it doesn’t foam up and remove your skin’s natural oils. We use it morning and night and our skin couldn’t be happier.

We recommend leaving the bottle out on the counter so you can admire the packaging. It’s chic, minimalist, and yet unique with falling black letters cascading down the bottle. Fair warning though, Peet Rivko founder Johanna, is so passionate about creating skincare that everyone can use. All of the products are actually unisex. So, don’t be surprised if your boyfriend/husband/significant other gets hooked too.

To learn more about the cleanser, we asked Peet to give us the run down on the best ways to apply, and what sets it apart from the rest.

The Moment: Can you introduce us to the Gentle Cleanser?

Peet: Our Gentle Cleanser is a non-foaming cream cleanser designed for the most sensitive of skin. The texture is actually more like a mix between a cream and gel – it’s very lightweight and formulated with aloe vera, glycerin, and green tea. I love it because it removes daily grime and excess oil while maintaining natural pH and oil balance. Your skin is soft and smooth after using – never tight or dry feeling.

The Moment: Most noteworthy ingredient?

Peet: A tie between aloe vera and green tea. Aloe is a plant-extract used in several natural skincare products because of its soothing and healing properties. It’s high in amino acids and vitamins A, B, C, and E.  We also formulate with green tea because of its high level of antioxidants which help fight free radicals and protect against UV damage.

The Moment: Best way of applying?

Peet: We recommend dampening your hands first and then gently massaging onto your skin – then rinse off completely. You can also lightly dampen your face first and apply the cleanser with dry hands if that’s preferable. 1-2 pumps will do the trick.

The Moment: What makes the Gentle Cleanser different than other cleansers on the market?

Peet: This is the cleanser that your dermatologist wishes you would use. It’s ultra gentle, mild, non-foaming, and fragrance-free. And on top of that, 100% non-toxic and made of plant-based ingredients.

There are a few mainstream cleansers on the market designed for sensitive skin but their ingredient list is mostly water, glycerin and a bunch of synthetic preservatives. We wanted to create a clean, plant-based alternative. Enter, our Gentle Cleanser. Like all of our products, our cleanser is free of toxins – no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, PEGs, silicones, or petroleum – and free of irritants commonly found in natural skincare such as fragrance, limonene, essential oils, nut oils, or floral extracts.

It’s perfect for all skin types because it’s so lightweight and non-irritating. It’s also great for pregnant women or new moms dealing with hormonal fluctuations and in need of a cleanser that’s gentle, calming and anti-inflammatory.

The Moment: Why do you leave out essential oils in your cleanser?

Peet: Essential oils smell amazing, but they can be irritating for more sensitive types. By definition, they are highly concentrated plant extracts, usually from the leaves or flowers, and are extremely active. On more sensitive skin and when not properly diluted, they can cause redness, itchiness, or inflammation.

The Moment: How often do we use it?

Peet: For dry skin, we recommend using at night only. For combination or oilier skin, we recommend using morning and night.

The Moment: What skin type works best with the cleanser?

Peet: This cleanser is truly designed for all skin types. While we had the most sensitive skin in mind when we formulated it, it’s great for dry / combination / or oily because it’s so lightweight, gentle, and yet effective at removing daily buildup and makeup.

Special thanks to Johanna Peet!
