Montauk has been known to be many things: a serene getaway whose endless shoreline and clear waters can easily deceive you into thinking you’re much farther away than an easy (albeit quite crowded) train ride from Manhattan, a summer hotspot for Aperol Spritz-slinging city dwellers, a foodie destination, and now– thanks to the Surf Lodge — a wellness haven.
Jayma Cardoso’s Surf Lodge is a hotel, a restaurant, a music venue, and a Montauk mainstay that’s made waves for its laid-back beach vibe infused with an air of club-like debauchery, making it the ideal retreat for the weekend warriors and droves of city folk who stake claim over it’s waterfront bar for the summer.
Perhaps in homage to all of the bustling days and nights The Surf Lodge has hosted across the years, Jayma and longtime collaborator (and incredible wellness director in her own right) Marisa Hochberg have decided to open The Surf Lodge Sanctuary, a wellness studio for those seeking respite from the sun-drenched and often frenetic vibe Montauk embodies during its peak summer months.
From daily yoga and pilates classes taught by instructors like Sarah Levy, founder of Y7 Yoga, and wellness guru Melissa Wood as well as a highly curated shop featuring the best in vegan and cruelty-free beauty products and ethical activewear from Free People’s FP Movement line, The Sanctuary will offer visitors a place to slow down and re-center throughout the summer. The team also plans to establish The Sanctuary as a center for holistic wellness education, and they’re currently planning a not-to-miss lineup of lectures and panels by luminaries in the space like Bobbi Brown and David Asprey.
Building The Sanctuary as a standalone operation away from the rest of the Surf Lodge’s activity was a conscious decision, and one that Jayma and Marisa hope not only provides physical rest and recovery to its guests, but spiritual and mental relaxation, too. Developing a space built on wellness and health was a natural next step for Jayma, and if the creativity and success behind The Surf Lodge is any indication, then the Sanctuary is sure to be another spot on every Montauk weekender’s list.
