It’s about time we started doing more beauty tutorials on The Moment (the last two were over the summer, the summer! (our Millennial makeup tutorial and Bronzed Summer Look in case you missed them)). This one is for all you Valentine’s Day fan out there… and because spring, spring!, is just around the corner.
This time, we asked our clean make-up artist friend and The Moment’s Beauty Expert, Sarah Rose, to create the look for us. Sarah Rose is the ultimate when it comes to clean beauty products. She’s pretty much tried them all and comes prepared with an endless list of tips and tricks. She calls herself a makeup therapist (check out her Instastories takeover on The Moment for what that’s all about). In short, she helps women feel good about the skin they’re in, and inspires confidence through using makeup to enhance the beauty that you already have with clean, non-toxic products. A message we love and one that’s perfect for a self-love day like Valentine’s Day.
Enjoy the tutorial and leave any questions for Sarah Rose down in the comments!

- Honest Hazel Eye Gels, $12 for a 3 pack
“In my practice, I like my complexion to look as natural as possible. To attain a natural-looking complexion–good skin prep is necessary! Clean, hydrated, exfoliated skin will serve as the perfect canvas for your makeup application. To begin, generously mist over clean skin. This mineral-rich, anti-inflammatory toner by Osea hydrates and conditions the skin while acting as a vehicle for your face oil to absorb more efficiently. While your skin is still damp, press your face oil into your skin using your fingertips. If you have a few extra seconds to spare, spend some time gently pressing and massaging the oil in. Massaging the face encourages lymphatic drainage and can relieve a lot of inflammation and sometimes even stubborn congestion if you make a habit of it. Face oil can sometimes feel like it takes longer to absorb–and if I know anything about New York women–every minute counts, so by mixing your face oil and toner you can bypass the waiting period between applying your skincare and makeup.
The Honest Hazel Eye Gels are can greatly reduce puffiness or fine lines resulting from dehydration, perfect before an event or date. I recommend starting with eye makeup (I’ll explain why later) and placing a pair of eye gels on your under eye while you’re applying. This way, it gives your under eyes a little TLC and clean-up is easy because you simply remove the eye gel and voila–you’ll look bright, awake and ready for complexion.” – Sarah Rose
“Let’s be honest–nothing feels better than a little sun-kissed glow. However, this time of year in the Northeast we’re lucky if we are kissed by even one sweet ray of sunshine. So, I’m sorry if the memo’s a little late–but your go-to bronze goddess look is very out of season. To make up for it, Winter makeup can be packed with FUN! It’s time to experiment with color and texture or a bold lip (which perfectly complements your all-black winter uniform)! To keep things interesting, we’re putting lip gloss on the eyes and adding lots of highlighter and shine to make you look as radiant as you are.” – Sarah Rose

“Starting your makeup application with the eyes is one of the biggest things that I’ve held onto in my practice as a clean makeup artist. There are a few reasons why I prefer to start with eye makeup. One, because it gives some time for your skincare to sink in even more. Two, because it’s a lot easier to clean up under the eyes if you don’t have to worry about removing the concealer you so strategically applied! When getting ready for an event, It’s a life-changing hack, I promise–try it!
Katie Jane Hughes style and skill has inspired makeup artists all over the world, she is THE master of the glossy eye look–so this one’s for you, girl! Using RMS’s Lip Shine in Moment (totally a coincidence), gently and sparingly pat onto the eyelid from lash line to brow bone. Since there’s a good amount of coconut oil in this product, it does melt down quite a bit so start conservatively.
After applying the lipshine to the lids, apply Rituel De Fille’s Celestial Sphere Eye Soot in Ara to the inner corner of the eyes using a synthetic-haired brush. Simply pat with your ring finger around the edges to make sure everything is blended softly. These Eye Soots are seriously captivating and reflect multiple tones as the light hits it at different angles.
Using Kjaer Weis’s mascara, which is one of my very favorites because it won’t flake or smudge on you throughout the day, apply mascara to your lashes focusing on wiggling the product into the roots and lifting up from there. Plus, it’s refillable–so mother nature thanks you too.
This eye look is simple and minimal but modestly eye catching. With a softer but fun eye look like this, you can feel free to experiment with fun lip color.” – Sarah Rose
“After your skin is prepped with a face oil, put a pea sized amount of the Alima Pure Liquid Silk Foundation on the back of your hand. Using your hand as the palette and your fingers as your tool, gently and in downward motions begin to blend this sheer and creamy foundation into the skin. For most people, even those who are prone to congestion, the majority of their skin is clear. Using a lighter coverage foundation simply evens out the skin tone. When you partner foundation with a concealer with higher coverage, you can go back in and give more attention to the areas that need a bit more coverage. For me, these areas tend to be under my eyes and on my chin, where my stress loves to display itself.
Once your foundation is blended, warm up a bit of concealer onto your finger tip and begin applying by creating an upside down triangle underneath the eye. I love Juice Beauty’s Phyto-Pigments perfecting concealer because it maintains its high coverage while still feeling light-weight, even over my layers of face oil (I’m a little heavy handed on myself because I don’t mind some extra dew). Once applied into an upside down triangle, blend edges over cheekbone and onto the bridge of the nose if you have some redness there like I do. This creates a bright, flat plane instead of a semi-circle below the eyes.
To further brighten, apply Maya Chia The Highlight of The Day in the Happy Hour on the cheekbones, down the nose, on the cupids bow, and on the brow bone. Give a pop of cheer to the cheeks using Tata Harper Volumizing Lip + Cheek Tint in Very Sweet. This subtle peachy-pink brings the perfect amount of health to the cheeks.” – Sarah Rose
“Spela’s Matte Liquid Lips have outstanding performance. No bleeding or smudging here, the product stays right where you want it without having to worry–making it perfect for events or dates. I like blending into my lips with my fingertips since the shades are so pigmented. There’s certainly a shade for everyone too.” – Sarah Rose
Special thank to Sarah Rose!
