We were first introduced to Root Science through friends of friends. It was one of those games of beauty telephone, where one person hears about it and can’t keep the secret to themselves. There was talk of well-made products that worked wonders. The Root Science Youth Facial Serum was our first venture into the brand. Then, the Root Science Polish Facial Exfoliant. Product after product, we were growing addicted and found ourselves spreading the word about Root Science to all of our friends too! We fell in love with their pure, natural scent. They’re so unique and thoughtfully made, that you kinda feel like someone created these products just for you, like a handmade gift or homemade cookies. We did a little research and tracked down the founder, a young Icelandic women, Gigja Hlín Wesneski, in San Francisco.
When you meet Gigja, you feel as if an Icelandic princess just walked into the room. Her milky skin is free of makeup, and naturally, her dark hair is pulled back into a loose braid. Most remarkable though is the quiet strength she exudes.
Her quest to create the most potent skincare started when her sister was suffering from horrible acne. Dermatologists couldn’t help her, so Gigja went back to her Icelandic roots to see if she could find plant remedies that could help and heal. Her theory being that 1) these are plants that have been used for hundreds of years, standing the test of time, so they must be effective and 2) Iceland has one of the harshest conditions for plant life to thrive, and only the toughest and most potent plants can survive. She also consulted her grandmother who possessed a wealth of knowledge on ancient recipes and timeless remedies. The result way Root Science, a minimalist dream line.
We met up with Gigja this spring in Northern California where she made us a superfood salad and told us about her line. Watch the video to learn more about the creation and check out Gigja’s Super Antioxidant Salad recipe below.
