The Right Way To Use a Powder Cleanser

A while back we attended a clean beauty panel where we learned that powder cleansers can be made so much cleaner than regular cleansers because they require less preservatives and stabilizers. We got super excited, and starting testing out all the powder cleansers and masks we could get out hands on. In case you’ve never tried a powder cleanser for yourself, let us tell you now, it’s not as easy as they sound. The tradeoff for fewer, simpler ingredients can be a big mess in your bathroom sink. We saw review after review of these products where people loved the product, but couldn’t quite figure out how to use them. On our own powder cleanser journey, we learned a few tricks to making the process (and the powder) as smooth as possible. Along with our tips, are our favorite powders and exactly how to use them.

___________

Powder To Cream

For all intents and purposes, powder to cream is a lot simpler than powders that turn into pastes. These are great to mix up in your hands, require less water, and can be made foamier by rubbing your hands together or using a natural kjonac sponge. Because these cleansers are non-toxic, they don’t have any SLS (the ingredient that makes shampoo and body wash super foamy, but irritate the eyes and skin) so it’s a good idea to consider a sponge to pump up the foam if that’s your thing.

Here are some of our favorites:

Hannes Dottir Cyrstal Aura Daily Masque

Crystals transform into a mild-foaming cleanser as the sea kelp comes to life. Super fast application and clean up, and a pretty little jar to add to your shelf.

Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Powder Cleanser

Perfectly dosed out packets take the guessing game out of powder cleansers (but we’re not so sure about the added unnecessary waste). This one has definite foam potential so a natural sponge will take it to the next level.

Odacité Green Ceremony Cleanser

Everything Odacité makes is pure magic, including their matcha cleanser. It lightly exfoliates and leaves your skin feeling really soft. The matcha scent is strong, but you can’t beat how well it cleanses without over-tightening the skin.

___________

Powder to Paste

Rule number one of powders that transform into masks or exfoliants, get a bowl. The instructions will tell you to mix equal parts in your hand, but it’s just not worth it. You end up going heavy on the water and then struggle to reopen and pour the right amount of powder into your hand. Getting a chic little mixing bowl to keep under your sink solves this completely. Invest in a pretty scoop too to get the right amount of product out of the jar. Start with a little water, and then sprinkle the powder in bit by bit to get the perfect amount. You can always add more powder, but you can’t take out excess water. Also avoid sensitive, delicate ares, like around the eyes.

The Root Science Polish started it all for us. It was the first, mix-it-yourself formula we ever tried. We still use it about once a week to really slosh away dead skin cells.

___________

Mix it Up

Water isn’t the only thing to mix with your powder cleanser. Try a rose water to add a toning element to the cleanser, or greek or goat’s milk yogurt and a few drops of honey for ultra hydration.

Go Deep

Many of these cleansers are made with detoxifying clay. Leave the paste on the skin for a few extra minutes and let the powder penetrate deep and cleanse out the pores before washing off with luke-warm water. Soak a warm towel and drape it over your face to allow the skin to absorb the powder’s full benefits.

Finish It Off

Hydrate hydrate hydrate! With a still damp face, apply your serums and oils to keep skin ultra firm and hydrated. The water mixes with the oil and enhances it ten fold.
